Rocket Academy at The Hobbies Shop!



Learn the science behind real model rockets during this exciting two-part workshop.

Students will build an Estes Cosmic Cargo rocket while learning:

• Rocket history
• Rocket anatomy
• Newton's Laws of Motion
• Stability and flight
• Payload experiments
• Rocket safety

One week later, everyone is invited to Hite Park for Launch Day where students will prepare, inspect, and safely launch their rockets under instructor supervision.

This class is perfect for beginners, homeschool students, scouts, and anyone interested in science, engineering, or aviation.

Recommended Ages:Participants should be 10 years of age or older. Parents or guardians are encouraged to stay and participate in the class, and must remain present for participants under 16 years of age.

Approximately 2–2½ hours each session.

Students take home their completed rocket.

Space is limited. 24 Students

  • No experience necessary.
  • Permanent markers will be provided for decorating rockets.
  • Dress for the weather on Launch Day.
  • Launches are weather permitting.
  • Every participant takes home their own Estes Cosmic Cargo rocket.

Skill Details: Rocket Academy at The Hobbies Shop introduces Beginner students to real model rocketry through a fun, hands-on STEM experience. Build an Estes Cosmic Cargo rocket, learn rocket science and safety, then launch it during our guided launch day at Hite Park in Charles Town, West Virginia. Perfect for homeschool families, scouts, and future engineers.
Materials Included: Includes Trainer, Rocket Kit, All Building Supplies, and one Motor.
Requirements: Age Recommendation: 10 years and older Participants should be 10 years of age or older. Parents or guardians are encouraged to stay and participate in the class, and must remain present for participants under 16 years of age. This is a hands-on STEM workshop involving model rocket construction, tools, and an outdoor launch. Adult participation makes the experience even more fun and helps students during the build and launch activities.
Instructor: Ed Yarborough
Instructor Bio: Ever since Ed Yarbrough was a little boy growing up in the 1960s, he has always loved aircraft and space. He grew up in the early days of the modern age space program, and learned a lot about rockets and spacecraft by building and flying model rockets. Even after an almost 50 year career in the aerospace industry and earning college degrees in aerospace engineering, he still enjoys the excitement of building and launching model rockets. Come to The Hobbies Shop on 23 July to learn about rocket science and how to build rockets YOU can fly safely! Who knows? Maybe YOU'LL want to be in aerospace too! Ed never outgrew the fun of being a 10 year old model rocketeer!
